MASTA
Camps Sessions I and II
The 3-day session held at the Howell Conference and Nature Center are designed for young string players in their 1st or 2nd year of playing their instrument or of younger ages. Students in 6th grade or younger will be successful at camp. These sessions are also great places for first time campers, giving students a great first experience away from home.
Orchestra
The MASTA Camp Orchestras are directed by leading teachers in Michigan and result in a high-quality musical experience for your students. Orchestras are ability-based to guarantee success for your child.
Sectionals
Daily sectionals lead by specialists on each instrument give your student specialized instruction on their orchestra parts.
Small Ensembles
Daily small ensembles coached by high-quality teachers help your child develop techniques and skills specialized to your child’s abilities and designed to expand their skills.
Rhythm and Theory
Small classes in rhythm, movement, and theory develop skills away from the instrument in fun and engaging classes geared to the age of the students.
Camp Life
The MASTA Camps are an outstanding camp experience for the young string player. Students stay in barracks style cabins with attached bathroom facilities and showers. Each cabin has between 10 and 18 students with 2 adult counselors. Cabins are air-conditioned so students can get the rest they need while in their cabins. Counselors are all musicians themselves giving students a connection to a musical and social mentor while at camp.
Recreation
Recreation opportunities at camp are plentiful including: archery, obstacle course, nature walks, swimming, crafts, and more
Meals
Meals are age-appropriate and plentiful. Students have hot menu items for every meal and choices are offered for vegetarians and other dietary needs. All dietary concerns can be accommodated.

A limited number of need-based scholarships are available from the Michigan Chapter of the American String Teachers Association. Scholarships applications can be downloaded (here) after January 1st each year or by contacting Kelly DeRose, MASTA Outreach Director, by email or at 231-759-3277. The deadline for scholarship applications is April 15, so please act quickly. MASTA Scholarships cannot be used for the camp deposit, but all deposits are refundable before June 1st.

There is a brief audition at the start of camp for students at Session III, to appropriately place them in Orchestra and Chamber Ensembles.

Daily sectionals are lead by specialists on each instrument to give your student thorough instruction in technique and on their orchestra parts.
Chamber Music
Daily small chamber ensembles coached by experienced musicians help campers
develop
as individual musicians. The ensembles
feature small groups of campers with only
one or two players per part. Each ensemble
is featured on a camper Chamber Music
Recital the final evening of camp.
